Fifties from GYO’s Mohammed Akhan and Everest’s Nyron Bissu and a five-wicket haul from Malteenoes spinner Chad Shivrattan were the highlights of the opening round of the Georgetown Cricket Association (GCA) New York Tri State 50-over U-19 cricket tournament which commenced yesterday.
At Malteenoes, the hosts overpowered Rubis by seven wickets after a 69-run opening stand between Wayne McPherson (21) and Akeem Crithlow (15) backed up by 16 not out from Tuen Hicks and an unbeaten 10 from Matthew Jupiter led the Thomas Lands side 104-3 in 19 overs.
Daveanand Khemraj took 2-32 for 103 all out in 28. 1 overs as only Andrew Samaroo (47), Ravindra Samaroo (12) and Khemraj (11) reached double figures as off-spinner Chad Shivrattan grabbed 5-12.
At YMCA, GYO, on the back of 82 from Mohammed Akhan, 27 from Elnathon Suknanan and 25 from Yeudister Persaud scored 239 to beat GNIC by 95 runs. Leg spinner Campta Persaud had 4-60 and Trevon Jones took 2-17 for GINC who fell for 145 despite 36 with six fours and 26 from Euan Blair. Yeudister Persaud had 3-21 and Seepersaud 3-33 for GYO.
At Everest, Nyron Bissu top scored with 73 and got support from Zachariah Mootoo (33) as the home team made 178-7. Left arm spinner Daniel Mootoo had 3-19. DCC, without most of their key players due to Demerara U-19 practice, were bundled out for 87 in 28 overs with Garrick Persaud and Brandon Jaikarran making 24 each. Mohammed Zameer took four wickets and Marlon Boele two as Everest won by 97 runs.
At DCC, GCC beat Transport Sports Club in the other game played yesterday. Competition will continue tomorrow.
