The Berbice Cricket Board (BCB) and Sueria Manufacturing Ltd of Eccles Industrial Site, on Saturday last launched four different 20/20 Cricket Tournaments for Cricket Teams in the Berbice.
The official launching was done at the Albion Community Centre Conference Hall which was packed by BCB Executives, representatives from clubs taking part in the Tournament, cricketers and members of the media.
The Tournament bowled off on Saturday in the Upper Corentyne zone, while the Lower Corentyne and New Amsterdam/Canje zones began on Sunday. The West Berbice zone would start on the 1st April, 2018 as the Berbice Cricket Board has agreed to allow the West Berbice Cricket Association to complete an ongoing cricket tournament.
President of the BCB Hilbert Foster stated that over 70 teams would be playing in the four tournaments which would be played under the Magic Moments brand.
The tournaments, he said would result in four different 20/20 Champions being crowned in four different zones. At the end of the four tournaments, the four champions would then play each other in another tournament for the right to be called Berbice Second Division T/20 Champions.
Foster urged the teams participating in the Magic Moments Tournament to be disciplined at all times, to invest in youths as they are the future of Berbice Cricket and to assist the BCB to promote the game at the grass root level. He expressed confidence that the Magic Moments Tournament would play a major role in the rebirth of Village Cricket and the formation of cricket teams in every community in Regions five and six.
The long serving cricket official stated that in 1990, Berbice had over one 120 teams, but today the figure is just above 70.
The objective of the Berbice Cricket Board for 2018 is to get the figures back over the 100 mark. To achieve this ambitious goal, the Board would be organising tournaments at the Under-15, Under-17, Under-19, Under-21, Female, Inter-zone, Intermediate and First Division levels. Tournaments would also be played at the Primary and Secondary Schools levels.
Foster in his speech showered praises on Managing Director of Sueria, Frank Sanichara, for his commitment and dedication. Sanichara, a Berbician by birth and a former cricketer, was lauded for his investment into Berbice Cricket. The Company was given the assurance that the Tournament would be well organised. Magic Moments Brand Manager Edward Layne stated that his Company was investing in Berbice Cricket because of the confidence in the current leadership and also because it was fully aware that Sports were the avenue for bringing people together. He said that The Magic Moments Tournament was just the start of a long term relationship with the BCB, which would transform Berbice Cricket for the better. Layne disclosed that at the end of the tournament, two All Stars Teams would be selected to play a match before the Grand Finals which would be played under lights at the Albion Sports Complex.
The presentation of prizes for the four tournaments would be done at a Special Dinner and Award Ceremony, as the objective is to make the players and officials feel special and appreciated. Layne also announced that Sueria Manufacturing would be sponsoring an Inter Secondary School Cricket Tournament in the new school term. He challenged the BCB to uphold its high standard and to make the four tournaments memorable for all residents of Berbice. The Tournament was officially launched when Layne handed over the four Championship Trophies to BCB Secretary Robby Saywack in front of the appreciative audience that included BCB officials.
