There are moves to collect monies from state employees who occupy Government living quarters and are refusing to pay their rent.
Accountant General Jennifer Chapman addressed the matter yesterday during the Public Accounts Committee, when it was pointed out that there are a number of persons in Region Three (Essequibo Islands/West Demerara) who are not paying rent.
There are 91 government buildings commanded by the Region Three administration of which 67 are occupied.
State auditors found in 2016 that rent was not being collected from the 67 employees.
Regional Executive Officer of Region Three, Denis Jaikaran, stated that since the region wrote to the employees, 21 occupants have started to pay rent. However, others have not complied although letters were sent to them. “The fact that you [Jaikaran] would have identified that several officers need to pay rent, you need to deduct it from their salary on a monthly basis. That is my recommendation to you. Write them and advise them about the commencement date for the deductions,” Chapman advised.
There have been issues in other regions where government employees have not been paying rent for state-owned living quarters.
PAC Chairman, Irfaan Ali stated that it is standard for deductions to be made from the salary of the delinquent employees.
According to Ali, Jaikaran did not need the advice from the PAC to execute the deductions from the salaries of the employees.
