– farmer claims cops took $70,000, case under investigation
A 55-year-old cattle farmer of Number 64 Village is left baffled after he was told that his horse that was stolen, found and now at the Whim Police Station, has to be subjected to a DNA test before police can determine if the animal belongs to him.
As strange as it sounds, it actually happened.
Chandrapaul Hemraj, who has four horses, including the one that was impounded and 10 head of cattle, said the animal was stolen from his home some months ago, but managed to find its way back.
“Me does tie meh horse ah the cow pen and couple weeks after dem thief out meh horse and meh mek one report at Number 62 outpost. So one Friday like he find he way back and he come and go straight ah cow pen…Meh wife and suh bathe he”, the man said.
The following day, Hemraj stated that the thief again stole his horse. Later that day, the animal was spotted being transported on a truck.
The police were reportedly alerted and the truck with the horse was intercepted.
The animal was taken to the Whim Police Station animal pound, where it remains.
According to the farmer since the animal has been there the persons who stole the horse are claiming it is theirs. He however, stressed that he has had the animal since it was a colt.
The horse he said has the brand number 40XC. The other persons who are claiming the animal is theirs had allegedly placed a different brand on the neck (AN76). The fate of the animal has since been left in the hands of the police. Hemraj stated that the police at Whim Station told him that a DNA test has to be carried out to determine who owns the animal.
“Dem tek hair from he tail and dem tek hair from dem horse wa me got home deh”.
He added that the vet was present when this was told to him, and some $70,000 was paid by the man to have them go ahead with the test.
“Dem tell me it go tek two months fuh the result come back but we want back me horse so even if me had to borrow money fuh pay da $70,000, me do am”, the fifty-five-year-old said.
The samples from the horse were reportedly taken to a lab at Whim Village.
Meanwhile, in an invited comment on the issue, Divisional Commander Lyndon Alves stated that animal is in dispute and that a file was compiled and sent to DPP last week for advice on the way forward. He added that he is unaware of any requests made by the police to have a DNA test be done on the animal and argued that if money was taken by the police for such they will be dealt with.
Hemraj is hopeful that he will have his animal returned to him since he claimed it his ” work horse”.
