The Guyana Squash Association’s (GSA) Toucan Distributors Junior Skill Level tournament continued on Wednesday at the Georgetown Club with a number of matches, the most exciting being the Kirsten Gomes vs Madison Fernandes clash.
Featuring several debut players, the overall standard was not too high but the enthusiasm of the children arguers well for future of the sport. An unusually small gathering watched as Gomes and Fernandes when at each other in a fast paced encounter with Gomes eventually getting the better of Fernandes 11-9 in a competitive first game.
Gomes played an array of well executed shots in a match punctuated by long rallies and excellent retrievals that saw him dominating the second game to win 11-6. Fernandes showing plenty of spunk fought back to win the third game 11-8 and the fourth 11-7 and her confidence was on the rise.
Fernandes raced to three quick points before Gomes had registered one in the fifth game but Gomes won the next two points to reduce Fernandes’ lead to just a point. The pendulum swung in Fernandes’ favour as she scored three consecutive points to take a 5-2 lead.
However, Gomes was not done yet and rallied to win the next four points to take back the lead 6-5 to the delight of her support group which included her parents. Fernandes won the next point to even the score at 6 and there was a see-saw battle, both girls giving their all before Kirsten finally closed out the fifth game, 11-9 to win the match.
Teija Edwards had an easy win against Joshua Verway who is getting better all the time despite her loss. Edwards won the first game 11-7. The next two games featured Verway fighting closely before Edwards eventually took both games to win 13-11, 15-13.
Demetrius De Abreu had two wins on the night, beating James Mekdeci 11-5, 11-2, 11-7 before being asked to work a bit harder in his 11-7, 11-5, 11-9 triumph over Lucas Jonas. The tournament was scheduled to continue last night and today from 18:00hrs at the same venue. The finals are set for tomorrow from 17:00 hrs.
