The 10th edition of the Desmond Dorsett Memorial Road Race Classic was successfully held on Sunday on the Corentyne Coast. The event which is organized by the Dorsett Family of Leeds/No50 village Corentyne began saw over 30 athletes taking to the starting line.
The event, which was open to athletes throughout Berbice, was run in five categories namely male Open, Under 20 males, U20 females U15 Boys and U 15 girls.
The senior runners raced off from No47 Village and ended at the popular No53 Complex covering a distance of four miles. The U15 athletes covered a distance e of 3 ½ miles beginning at No 49 Village and also finish at the No53 Complex.
In the end it was Laurence Halley who crossed the finish line first by winning the male Open category. His closest challenger was Kofie Grey who had to settle for second beating out Donald Jackson who copped third.
Demarcus Williams, who is a well know athlete on the Corentyne Coast, had things his way in the U20 category. Williams was always in the leading bunch as he eventually won easily from Enoch Rutherford who placed second and Thaddius Donald who ran in third.
Swarswattie Mattadin, another seasoned campaigner showed her rivals a clean pair of heels by winning the female U20 category. Placing second was Lisa Douglas with Maria Welch crossing the finishing line third.
Deon Harris was the winner among the U15 boys as he got home ahead of Raymond Matheson with Joshan Marshan placing third. There was a ding dong battle among the U15 girls with Ashley Mohamed outsprinted Denica Ross in the end to take top honours.
The Prime Minister’s representative for Region Six, Gobin Harbajan, was the oldest participant.
Residents in the various communities turned out in large numbers to witness the event which pass through No 49, Leeds, No51, No52 and finally finishing at the No 53 Sports Complex.
The top finishers were all presented with trophies, medals and other memorabilia Compliments of the Department of Sport and the Dorsett family.
A fun day which included volleyball, football, cricket and other games was then successfully held at the NO53 Sports Complex.
The late Superintendent Dorsett, who hailed from Canje, but subsequently relocated to the Corentyne area was an ardent sports fan who participated in numerous sporting activities including Cricket and athletics during his hay day in the Guyana Police force and in the community.
The event was coordinated by his wife Wavney Dorsett, a retired Head Mistress, and community activist and re-migrant along with his children, family well-wishers and friends. (Samuel Whyte)
