The National Senior and Junior Chess Championships concluded on Monday evening at the National Racquet Centre on Woolford Avenue with Wendell Meusa being crowned Senior Champion after defeating Anthony Drayton 2-0, while Joshua Gopaul beat Ghansham Allijohn 2-0 to emerge as the new Junior Champion.
Minister of Social Cohesion with responsibility for Youth, Sport and Culture, Dr George Norton along with Director of Sports Christopher Jones were among those present at the historic Championships which was described by President of the Guyana Chess Federation (GCF) Attorney James Bond as a very successful one.
The GCF Head thanked the members of the federation for their hard work in resuscitating Chess in Guyana and informed that there will be a gala on April 28 to honour the title holders and Masters.
Errol Tiwari whose contribution to the sport of chess has been phenomenal will
also be honoured at next month’s ceremony, while Bond thanked sponsors Sacha Cells for their tremendous support in helping to keep the sport of Chess alive.
Minister Norton shared his vision of resurrecting the game in the hinterland regions and has agreed to partner with the GCF to begin a pilot programme in Siparuta.
The Director of Sports presented the trophies to the winners and renewed the National Sports Commission (NSC) commitment to continue partnering with the GCF in making Chess one of the prominent disciplines in Guyana.
Bond thanked Minister Norton and Director of Sports Jones for their presence at the finals and their support to the executive of the GCF. (Sean Devers)
