Following up on initiative by National Off-spinner Steven Jacobs who resides on the northern section of Pike Street in Kitty, opposite where four houses were gutted by fire in the wee hours of March 7, the Guyana Jaguars Cricket team yesterday made a monetary donation to families who lost their homes.
The relief fund were received by Mrs. Jeanette Browne who collected the donation from Jaguar’s Head Coach Esuan Crandon on behalf of the six families who were left homeless in the wake of one of the biggest fires in Kitty in recent times.
Also present at the simple presentation which was held in front of what was left of the houses, were Jaguar Skipper Leon Johnson, Manager of the team Rayon Griffith and representatives of those affected in the tragedy.
The 29-year-old Jacobs, who last represented the Jaguars last year in Regional First-Class tournament, told Kaieteur Sports that he was moved to render assistance to the families who had lost all of their possessions in the fiery debacle.
“I Live almost opposite where the three houses were burnt to the ground and entire upstairs of the fourth was completed destroy so I unfortunately witnessed my neighbour’s homes going up in flames.”
Jacobs said he felt compelled to help but he could not do alone, so he reached to his extended family (the Jaguars team) and the Management of the four times defending Regional First-Class Cricket Champions did the hesitate when approached to help.
According to Johnson, who also represented the West Indies in Cricket, the players wanted to show that they not only represent this County on the field but felt their job of being National Ambassadors in Sports transcended off the field in times natural disasters like this one.
“These same people come to support us when we play cricket and so in their time of need we felt that once we could do something to support the rebuilding of their home and lives and it was important to give back in whatever little way we could,” Johnson said.
For the fire victims, this gesture came as a surprise and they were thankful for the contribution which demonstrated that the players were not just famous cricketers but also good human beings with generous hearts.
More than 20 persons, including children, have been left homeless and there is still a lot more needed. The Jaguars team encouraged other individuals and businesses to contribute if they could afford it.
Kissoon furniture Store is one of the businesses that have already contributed and for more information Mrs. Browne could be contacted on 656-1433. (Sean Devers)
