The Ministry of Social Protection, through the National Commission of the Elderly, held a training exercise for executives of Sunset Senior Citizens clubs in Regions Three, Four, Six and Ten, at the Ministry’s Cornhill Street Office.
Seven groups from the four regions participated in the training exercise, a government release said.
The Senior Citizens’ Clubs provide opportunities for seniors to meet and share their knowledge. It also provides a platform for seniors to raise issues and concerns affecting them.
At yesterday’s training exercise, the participants were educated on their roles and responsibilities, and the objective and perspective of the National Commission of the Elderly.
Director of Social Services, Wentworth Tanner, explained that the Sunset of Senior Citizens clubs were established to serve as guides for the Government’s policies for the country’s seniors. Through the Ministry of Social Protection, these groups will be used as vehicles to ensure seniors benefit from programmes implemented by the government
Tanner said “the main reason for establishing the clubs is to get feedback on some of the concerns that seniors have. I think it would be unfair for decision and policies to be made without the involvement of seniors.”
Moving forward, he said, the ministry is hoping to foster a greater relationship with the clubs that will eventually be established in all of the ten administrative regions. This initiative is part of the government’s overall plan to ensure senior citizens across Guyana lead meaningful lives.
