A family of six is now homeless after fire razed their two-storeyed home they rented and lived in up to yesterday morning.
Shaniza Willie, who is in her third trimester of pregnancy, said she lived at the location Lot 116 Block 2 Albion, Corentyne, Berbice with her husband and five children, ages 2, 5, 9, 10 and 11.
She stated that after sending her children off to school she left home to visit her landlady who lives not too far away.
It was approximately half an hour later that someone informed her that the home in which she was living was in flames.
“I left home about 9:00 hrs and go to my landlady place and within half hour, a message come and seh the house I live, fire burning it,” Willie said.
She recounted that when she returned, the house was already completely engulfed… it was impossible to save anything.
Willie explained that she left nothing alight in the two-storey building and there were no electrical issues. However, she did reveal that she suspects arson.
“Neighbours tell me [that] the fire started in the back room upstairs and the only thing I have in there is a bed and mattress. I had nothing lighting or so,” Willie divulged.
A source close to the family, suspects a neighbour since they are accused of stealing from the woman’s yard frequently.
The landlady, Soomattie Mohamed, is also suspecting the said neighbour of burning the building down.
Shaniza Willie is currently serving as a tutor at a Community Based Rehabilitation Centre for disabled children.

Meanwhile, a fire erupted in one of the containers at the Olendorff Compound in New Amsterdam, Berbice yesterday afternoon at approximately 13:00hrs.
It is unclear what may have started the fire but the fire brigade arrived promptly and managed to contain the blaze. No one was injured.
