DEAR EDITOR,
The Mayor & City Council’s statutory meeting held on March 12, 2018, descended to an all-time low and left the Guyanese citizenry in nothing short of shock as they all watched the basic concepts of democracy and good governance reduced to mere ashes. Were it not such a serious matter, one could easily mistake the events that unfolded for a satirical rendition.
The motion of ‘No Confidence’ brought by Councilor Sherod Duncan was long overdue, given the countless occasions that the Town Clerk not only flouted basic established principles of transparency and accountability, but the fashion in which he continues to ‘rule’, which can only be described as oppressive.
The Town Clerk, like the Mayor, by virtue of their behaviour, continues to display a discernible lack of respect for the Council as a whole, the Honourable Minister of
Communities and the citizens of Georgetown. This cannot and must not be allowed to continue unfettered. The Mayor accepted an external legal opinion on a ‘No Confidence’ motion brought against the Town Clerk which was also reportedly paid for by the Town Clerk.
It must be noted that the Council never made a request for a legal opinion but the Mayor, in her usual highhanded modus operandi, had the motion voted on without the ‘No Confidence’ motion at least being heard first.
The events as they unfolded were obviously a well orchestrated stage show and nothing short of ludicrous. One can only conclude that the Mayor, along with the Councilors who voted in favour of this ridiculous motion, by such actions, have demonstrated either their gross ignorance of the concept of due process or their lack of care for such.
Either way, the prospects are frightening that these are the people who are in charge of our city. Noteworthy is the fact that this very same Mayor was part of the cabal to move a motion of no confidence more than once against then Town Clerk Carol Sooba following the same procedures as Councilor Duncan.
Movement Against Parking Meters (MAPM) demands that the Mayor now explain to the citizens of Georgetown how the previous motions were deemed to have locus Standi and the one brought by Councilor Duncan does not.
The continued reckless decisions, nepotism, bullyism, cronyism and evidence of mounting corrupt transactions that do not pass even a basic transparency test has eroded any remaining trust the citizens of Georgetown held for the city’s chief administrators.
MAPM would like to make it clear that after an assessment of the conduct of the Mayor and Town Clerk, and taking into account the important nature of the role of the offices they hold, considers them both to NOT be fit and proper to hold such office. Further, MAPM calls on the Local Government Commission and the Minister of Communities to hold them accountable for the mismanagement of our once beautiful city.
MAPM stands with Councilor Duncan in full support of the ‘No Confidence’ motion and takes this opportunity to encourage him to bring a similar motion against the Mayor.
We would like to invite the public to join our silent protest tomorrow, Thursday March 15, 2018 from 12 noon to 1 pm as we register not only our support for Councilor Duncan, but also our unequivocal rejection of Patricia Chase Green and Royston King to continue as administrators of our city.
Thank you,
Movement Against Parking Meters (MAPM)
