Twenty six-year-old Marlon Freeman was yesterday acquitted of the December 22, 2013 murder of dredge owner Timothy Adams which occurred at Turtle Creek Road, Five Star Backdam, North West District.
Freeman, of Linden, had the murder indictment against him discharged after the jury returned a unanimous not guilty verdict at the end of a trial which was presided over by Justice James Bovell-Drakes at the High Court in Georgetown. Attorney-at-Law Folio Richards appeared for Freeman.
Prosecutors Mandel Moore and Lisa Cave appeared on behalf of the State.
Police in a statement had said that on the day in question, Adams, of Queenstown, Georgetown, had left Powis Landing en route to his mining camp located some distance away. His lifeless body was discovered the following day lying next to an ATV with a wound to the left side of the neck. Adams was taken to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead. The cause of death was given as haemorrhage and shock due to an incised wound to the neck, which was compounded by blunt trauma to the head.
Before leaving the courtroom yesterday, Freeman expressed gratitude to the jurors for their decision.
Freeman later told reporters that he was wrongfully accused of the crime and hopes to find a good job and move on with his life. His relatives, who were waiting for him outside the courtroom, joyfully hugged and kissed him. Meanwhile, some of Adams’s relatives wept, as others stood conversing, apparently, contemplating their next move.
