A 33-year-old Linden businessman was yesterday shot and killed at his residence by gunmen, in what family members described as a gruesome murder.
Dead is Romel Gomes, known as ‘Eddie’, of 53 Wismar Hill. Gomes lived alone with his two-year-old son
A relative of the now dead man told Kaieteur News that a woman who looks after his son went to his home to collect the child, and there she saw a man with dreadlocks – who she said was acting strangely – sitting in front of Gomes’ home. The woman said she then called for the child, who walked out of the yard to her. She decided to peek in the yard, and there she saw Gomes with his hands tied and a man standing next to him.
While she thought it strange, the confused woman said she collected the child and briskly walked away. She said she then heard a gunshot and immediately alerted the police that something was wrong.
Gomes was subsequently found dead at his home with gunshot wounds to the head. When the body was discovered, a yellow rope was still strapped around the left hand.
While the motive for the murder is unclear, a relative said that Gomes had earlier collected a “Box Hand”, and they believe that that may have been the reason for him losing his life. They said that the gunmen also left with Gomes’ new Toyota Allion car.
According to the relative, Gomes operated a grocery shop where he also sold wholesale beverages. He lived alone with his son after his wife Althia Gill-Gomes, whom he married last November, migrated to the United States of America a year ago.
