Former national cyclist Wilbert Benjamin continued his benevolent acts, this time Benjamin, who owns and operates the Benjamin Sports Store, Fitness Gym and Car Wash, presented 19 years old cyclist Romello Crawford with two Carbon Fiber Wheels and Tires.
Benjamin stated that he does not like how the Berbice based cyclists are bean treated and is doing everything to assist them in reaching their goals. He also does not like the coverage there are getting when they do well and is appealing for assistance.
Crawford who hails from Fyrish Village/ No 1 Road, Corentyne area, started his cycling career since at school. He first rode with the Flying Ace Cycling Club in Berbice. Now he rides with Trojan and mostly the PSL Cycle Club in Trinidad. Over the years he has not found much favour with the Guyana Cycling Federation (GCF), despite his dominance he has hardly been selected to represent Guyana in overseas meets.
He plans to win as many races as possible in Guyana. He said that, “I am doing well right now and will try my best to continue being the number one rider locally. If there are any offers to travel overseas, I plan to take it with both hands and get some good results.”
The soft spoken Crawford stated that I have no preference for road or track and is not afraid of any one. “I am a competitor; I love both. The training is a bit different; it doesn’t matter once I get the track fitness I should be alright and be able to handle the intensity.”
Although domicile in Guyana his Trinidad coach set his training programme. “I work along with Desmond Roberts who is also the President of the PSL Cycling Club in Trinidad; he is a great coach and mentor.”
“I am riding my current bike for quite a number of years. It’s getting a bit old. I would love to have a new race bike. I have three dream bikes; I really like the Specialized S-works tarmac 2018 the new Pinarello f-10 is a beautiful bike. I would be so happy if I can race with the new Scott 2018 (With Dura Ace Electronic Gears). Any of those bikes would go a long way in helping me reach my cycling goals.”
His advice to young Berbicians is to be consistent, there is no secret to success you must be able to train hard and be dedicated to. “I gained success from listening to my coach and got better over time. There is a life after cycling so you must not skip school.”
His major hurdle is Finance…..cycle racing is a very expensive. “Living the cyclist life is costly; the travelling, the bike maintenance and the supplements cost a lot of money. I would love to do some advertising contracts with a few companies. I would also like to take this opportunity to ask for sponsorship or support in any form to help my cycling career.” (Samuel Whyte)
