urer who was caught “under the clock” at Stabroek Market with a stolen wallet containing $240, and a cellular phone, after robbing an off-duty police constable was yesterday sentenced to 50 months imprisonment after pleading guilty to the offence.
Darren Bailey, 21, appeared before Principal Magistrate Judy Latchman in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts and pleaded guilty with explanation to the charge which alleged that on March 2, at Hinck Street, Georgetown, while being armed with a pair of scissors, he robbed Mahindra Dudhnauth of one cellular phone valued $25,000 and $240 cash.
Bailey in his explanation to the court stated that it was a case of mistaken identity. He added that on the day in question he was walking on the Plaisance Park when he approached the victim who resembles someone from the interior who owed him gold.
The court heard that Bailey walked up to the victim and placed the scissors to his neck and relieved him of the articles mentioned in the charge and made good his escape.
Police Prosecutor Arvin Moore told the court that on the day in question, the victim was walking north along Hinck Street when he was approached by Bailey, who was armed with a pair of scissors.
He placed the scissors to the victim’s neck and relieved him of his valuables before making good his escape south along Hinck Street. The victim then reported the matter to the police station.
Ranks from the Tactical Services Unit (TSU) were in the area when they received certain information
. The ranks then carried out a search in the area and they found the accused “under the clock” at Stabroek Market. A search was carried out on him and the wallet, which contained the $240 and the cellular phone were recovered.
He was then arrested and taken to the Brickdam Police Station.
The Magistrate after listening to the prosecutor and Bailey told the court that she took into consideration the age of the accused and she also took into consideration the serious nature of the offence and the need to prohibit others from committing the same offence.
Before sentencing the accused she said, “Do not steal from people because they work hard for what they want. You should do same, don’t go about the robbing people.” The accused was sentenced to 50 months imprisonment.
