The life of a former New Amsterdam Multilateral School student was cut short after he was shot dead by ranks in ‘B’ Division over his alleged involvement in a robbery committed on a businessman.
Amar Bissoon, 21, of Adelphi Village, East Canje, Berbice who attended the A-level school in Berbice and was well known by many, has left persons shocked and baffled as they try to piece together what may have led the youth to turn to a life of crime. A life they said, they didn’t know existed until after he was killed.
When this publication visited the home of the young man, relatives and friends were gathered discussing what took place. However, they refused to engage with the media. They stated that they do not know what happened and were unaware that Bissoon was involved in any illegal activity. An uncle of the young man said, Bissoon “never go in a boat to we knowing “.
A resident in the area said she knew Bissoon and his family for years.
“He came from a good background. I don’t know what happened or how he end up there. He got a small brother and the two of them does normally bring out cow to graze and so in the morning.”
A Facebook post by a young man who seemed to have known Bissoon for some time read,
“He wears an innocent mask but beneath is someone totally different.”
He further went on to state: “He went to one of the highest schools in the region and look what he turned out to be. Amar should have known better and lead by example but every rope has an end.”
The comments below the post indicated that persons had high expectations for him, not expecting he would turn along the path of crime.
Bissoon wrote seven subjects at CSEC level, gaining six. He graduated in 2014 at the New Amsterdam Multilateral School. Information also gathered revealed that a cousin of his was two weeks ago committed to stand trial in the Berbice High Court for murder.
Meanwhile, at the home of Indarjit Sham, a Cane Harvester attached to the Rose Hall Estate, his three children ages 17, 15 and 14 were visibly in tears, standing at their door leading to the bottom flat of their home in Betsy Ground, East Canje.
His father and brother were also at home preparing for wake. Sham’s eldest daughter said she last saw her father just around 5:00 am when he told them that he was going fishing but he did not mention where.
According to her, it is a norm for him to engage in fishing since it was for home use. He was expected to return later that day; he never did.
“Late yesterday, somebody bring a message that something happened to my father in the creek and that was it,” the devastated teen managed to mutter.
Brother of the now dead man, Nandkumar Sham, 35, a fisherman explained that he has always advised his brother to stay out of trouble. “People does always accuse he of doing wrong thing but people never see he do wrong thing. I still ain’t believe my brother do that what happen there”.
He said it is strange that his brother would venture to fish alone since they normally do so together.
He was described as a ‘good father’. His family denied his involvement in any crime and stated that they did not know who Amar Bissoon was when asked.
Amar Bissoon and Indarjit Sham were reportedly a part of a gang of six that invaded a ranch owned by Krishna Persaud, proprietor of K. Persaud and Sons trucking service of Vryheid, New Amsterdam, Berbice. Two other members, identified as Timothy Sampson and another, both from the Canje area were arrested.
Another gang member is at large after one was captured yesterday.
Details have since revealed that two workers for Persaud were on the ranch in Pottoco Creek, Berbice River, when the six men approached them. They were held at gunpoint; the men then stole 23 sheep, 15 ducks, a solar panel, a radio, a quantity of rope, and other valuables; property of a 50-year-old businessman of Vryheid, West Canje, Berbice. They loaded the items on a boat and subsequently escaped.
Shortly after the robbery occurred, police in ‘B’ Division were informed and a team led by a Senior Detective, acting on intelligence, intercepted a boat with the two suspects who are in custody, in the Berbice River and based on further information, the ranks proceeded to a location where the robbery allegedly took place.
There, they discovered all of the animals with their legs bound and the other stolen property loaded inside of a camouflaged aluminium boat.
It was after the ranks disembarked their boat that they were confronted by the now dead men who discharged several rounds at them. The officers quickly adapted tactical positions and returned fire, fatally wounding the men who were positively identified by the victims as members of the gang who committed the robbery.
A 12-gauge pump action shotgun, a .32 pistol, eleven live cartridges, and five live.32 rounds were found in possession of the bandits. Also three spent cartridges and a .32 spent shell were retrieved at the scene.
