In a widespread effort to identify new cricketing talent and to correct any technical problems at a young age, the Berbice Cricket Board would shortly be launching a comprehensive Coaching Programme for promising young cricketers. The newly elected Executives have been able to obtain sponsorship from an overseas based Guyanese who is excited to be associated with Berbice Cricket.
Board President Hilbert Foster, who negotiated the sponsorship deal, stated that the Coaching Programme would be the first one organised by the Berbice Cricket Board in several years since the Elite Training Programme in 2013. The Elite Training Programme was organised by the Berbice Cricket Board Special Events Committee under Foster’s leadership. The 2018 Coaching Programme would be funded with a major sponsorship and would involve Coaching sessions in four sub-zones – West Berbice, New Amsterdam/Canje, Lower Corentyne/Central Corentyne and Upper Corentyne.
The Berbice Cricket Board is hoping to attract a total of 50 youths (male and female) between the ages of 12 to 18 years in each sub-zones. The Berbice Cricket Selection Committee under the guidance of Chairman Albert Smith would be responsible for the selection of the players. Special emphasis would be placed on batting, fast bowling, spin bowling, wicketkeeping, fielding and physical fitness during the two days coaching clinics in each zone.
At the end of the four clinics, a squad of 40 youths/players would be selected to participate in a yearlong elite training programme. Coaches would be paid a stipend per session, while snacks would be provided for players.
The Coaching panel would include Andre Percival, Adrian Amsterdam, Delbert Hicks, Albert Smith, Tremayne Smartt and Julian Moore. Foster stated that the programme would be officially launched shortly and would bowl off by late March, 2018. The Cricket Development Committee under the leadership of Albert Smith would be responsible for the massive Coaching Programme. As part of the same programme, the Berbice Cricket Board would also be publishing educational posters, leaflets and magazine for free distribution to cricketers and Clubs. The name of the Coaching Programme sponsor would be announced during the launching ceremony.
