Former Berbice, Guyana and West Indies U-19 Wicketkeeper, 41-year-old Vishal Nagamootoo is the latest former National Cricketer, following his former Guyana team mate Ramnaresh Sarwan, to congratulate Hilbert Foster on his ascendency to the position of President of the Berbice Cricket Board.
The Berbician said he hoped that Elections of the Demerara and the Guyana Cricket Boards are held as soon as possible to bring back some normalcy to Guyana’s cricket.
“But for this to happen the County Boards need to pull together and vote wisely, since I feel that if the different factions fight each other depending on who they support only the cricketers will suffer,” Nagamootoo said.
Born in Whim, Corentyne, Berbice, on January 7, Nagamootoo is the younger brother of former West Indies leg-spinner Mahendra Nagamootoo and is confident that Foster can move Berbice cricket forward.
“Since I was a young boy playing for Port Mourant, I have known Mr. Foster and one of the things affecting Berbice cricket is lack of sponsorship for competitions. Mr Foster can solve that problem since he seems to be very good with marketing and gets plenty of sponsorship for Rose Hall Town (cricket teams). I am confident that he can do the same for Berbice cricket,” said Nagamootoo, whom many felt was unlucky not have played at least for the West Indies ‘A’ team.
“Now that Berbice has had its Elections, I have heard that there could be some changes at the GCB. Many of cricketers in Guyana want to see changes at the GCB but they can’t talkout since they fear victimization,” claimed Nagamootoo, the nephew of Guyana’s Prime Minister Moses Nagamootoo
Although Nagamootoo moved to the USA in 2005, he still follows Guyana’s Cricket and is disappointed Guyana’s cricket is riddled with politics, Court Cases and Administrators who don’t seem to care about the development of the players, but take all the credit when the team wins.
“Looking at Guyana winning for four years in a row (First Class tournament) I never knew that there was so much politics, Court Cases and a don’t care attitude for the players by those running Guyana’s cricket until I came home and spoke with cricket people in Berbice and Georgetown,” Nagamootoo told Kaieteur Sports from his home in New York.
I understand that there are persons who run Guyana’s Cricket as if it’s their own business and if you are not in the right faction you are sidelined. I want to see changes when the GCB elections are held and an atmosphere where everyone can work together to take Guyana’s cricket forward,” stated Nagamootoo, also the nephews of Test greats Rohan Kanhai and Alvin Kallicharran.
“I believe that if changes are not made in Guyana and West Indies Cricket, things will continue to go down. Some people believe that it is their right to be in a position forever even if they are not doing anything for the game but only for themselves and we must find a way for this kind of attitude to stop. Everyone must work together and their first interest must be the cricket,” lamented Nagamootoo, who says it was a shame that West Indies has to qualify for the next World Cup.
Nagamootoo, who became a Father on September 17 last year, has 116 dismissals in a 61-match First-Class career which began against Barbados in 1996 in Jamaica and ended against the Leewards in Essequibo in 2005.
He also played 31 Regional 50-over games for Guyana and his only First-Class century was made when he scored an unbeaten 115 against West Indies ‘B’ in St Croix in 2003 and shared in an unfinished 198 run-ninth wicket stand with West Indies ‘A’ team Manager Rayon Griffith (84*) which is still a Guyana record.
