Illegal vending within the commercial space of Charity has been an ongoing issue for quite some years. To date, the matter continues to engage the attention of the Regional Democratic Council of Region Two [Pomeroon/Supenaam].
The matter was commented on by a councilor of the RDC just last month, who noted that persons were occupying a Government reserve, within close proximity of the Charity Public Road. The councilor also explained that some individuals have extended their stalls over a trench which plays an integral role in draining the area.
The Charity Market is one of the main commercial hotspots on the Essequibo Coast, and continues to appeal to droves of vendors. The unlawful practice has already borne severe consequences, as multiple stakeholders are affected.
Reports reaching this publication indicate that there are severe instances of traffic congestion on the Charity roadways on Mondays – a particularly busy day in the community. Since vendors already occupy the revetment, minibus drivers are forced to stop and offload passengers on the road itself.
This publication was informed that there is already a market designated for vendors in Charity. Vendors claim, however, that more income is generated whenever they conduct business out of the chosen area.
Regional Chairman of Region Two, Devenand Ramdatt, stressed that the practice of vending along the road reserve is illegal. Ramdatt however believes that there should be adequate consultation before these vendors are relocated.
“We would have to meet with these vendors to ensure they comply. They must first be aware that they cannot continue vending along the road shoulders, putting the safety of others at risk. Then again, I am sure that they too would have concerns of their own to raise.” [Romario Blair]
