Colin ‘Superman’ Lewis and Keevin Allicock left yesterday for a one week training camp in Mexico City, Mexico which will be followed by the Central America and Caribbean (CAC) games qualifiers in the city of Tijuana immediately after.
‘Superman’ Lewis who is the reigning Caribbean Light Welterweight Champion and Allicock, Commonwealth Games silver medalist will be encamped from March 1st to 9th in Mexico City while the qualifiers will punch off from March 10th to 18th in Tijuana.
The duo will be accompanied by coach and Technical Director of the Guyana Boxing Association (GBA), Terrence Poole and their trip to Mexico was made almost exclusively possible by Guyana Olympic Association (GOA), according to head of the GBA, Steve Ninvalle. Ninvalle noted that the training camp was initially called off but head of the GOA, Juman-Yassin was very instrumental in pulling many strings to make the camp a success and although the GBA would’ve liked to have more participation, the association is nevertheless very grateful.
During an interview with Kaieteur Sport, Ninvalle further shared that both fighters will be insured for the period of time that they will be overseas representing the Golden Arrowhead. Ninvalle explained that this is a historic first for boxing in Guyana and the GBA will be moving towards having all boxers in the future that will be representing the nation insured against possible injuries.
