Petra’s third annual futsal tournament which is being sponsored by Corona beer, Namilco and Rose Ramdehol Auto Sales, continued Tuesday evening at the National Gymnasium on Mandela Avenue with six more matches.
The second match night’s play kicked off in exciting fashion as West Demerara powerhouse, Showstoppers pulled off a super 6-4 victory which was spearheaded by Dextoy Adams who scored a hat-trick in his team’s win.
Tucville had more opportunities to score but Showstoppers proved to be more clinical in putting away their chances in the big win.
The recently formed, star-studded Alpha Warriors team made a grand entrance to the futsal arena with a 5-1 thrashing of Kingston.
Meanwhile, winners of the last futsal tournament competed in Georgetown earlier in the month, Bent Street, who are also one of the favourites for the $600,000 first place cash prize, made little work of California Square with a 5-0 victory in their group stage, round robin match up on Tuesday. Ryan Hacket led the charge with a brace of goals.
Completing the winners’ row on Tuesday were Old Skool Ballers that defeated New Market Street 4-1, led by a brace from Raushan Rich, while North East brushed aside Channel Nine 4-0 with Kelvin Moore scored twice in the win and West Front Road defeated Sophia 4-1 to close off the night’s play.
Heated matches are expected when the tournament continues this weekend with round robin action in the group stage at the same venue due to the incentive for teams based on their finish in the group stage; the top finishers will get an additional $40,000, second place $30,000, third place $20,000 and fourth place $10,000.
Meanwhile, the runners-up $300,000 and third place $150,000, and the MVP of the tournament and a lucky patron will receive one motorbike each from part sponsors Rose Ramdehol through their hero brand. (Calvin Chapman)
