Prime Minister Moses Nagamootoo, who is recuperating in the United States after bypass heart surgery, could return in April.
Kaieteur News understands that doctors, who continue to monitor his recovery, have set a timetable of another six to eight weeks for his return. The Prime Minister departed Guyana on Saturday, February 3 for the US. In his absence, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Carl Greenidge, has been performing the duties of Prime Minister.
On Saturday, it was announced that President David Granger will not be attending the Twenty-Ninth Inter-sessional Meeting of The Conference of Heads of Government of The Caribbean Community (CARICOM).
“The Guyanese Head of State regrets his absence at the meeting but has opted to remain in Guyana to focus on domestic issues at this time,” a government statement said.
The statement did not explain what the domestic issues were. Guyana’s three-member delegation to the meeting which commended yesterday in Haiti is being led by Greenidge.
News of the Prime Minister’s health condition came as a shock.
The Prime Minister was advised by local doctors to seek further intervention following a routine medical examination in Guyana which revealed that he has ‘some cardiac issues’. Due to the recommendation from the local medial team, Nagamootoo brought forward a planned, private visit to the US.
Guyana has expressed appreciation to the surgeons, doctors, nurses and other medical professionals in Guyana and in the United States who provided “excellent” care to the Prime Minister. The Prime Minister continues to receive daily support of his wife, Sita Nagamootoo and other close relatives.
