The image of the Suddie Public Hospital is so tainted, that it has now been engaging the attention of the Regional Democratic Council of Region Two [Pomeroon/Supenaam]. As was reported at the region’s statutory meeting earlier this month, there is a lack of public confidence in the Suddie Public Hospital.
The Suddie Public Hospital is the largest and the main hospital on the Essequibo Coast, which continues to provide health care services to a population of over 150,000 residents. While this health institution renders services free of charge, however, there is a morbid fear that overcomes residents when seeking medical attention there.
Many Essequibians are fearful for their lives, since persons had reportedly died under mysterious circumstances at the hospital. At the region’s statutory meeting last week Tuesday, two matters surfaced which reflected negligence on the part of the Suddie hospital’s staff.
One of the matters which surfaced dated back to the latter part of last year when an ex-staffer of the RDC died while admitted at the hospital. Reports are that the man was last admitted at the hospital, but was later found dead in a nearby trench. Staffers claim that the man walked out of the hospital, and made his way out of the compound.
The second unfortunate incident which surfaced, occurred just last month when a four year old girl died minutes after receiving an injection at the hospital. The girl, who was the only child for her single mother, was admitted to the Suddie hospital for a fever. Upon receiving an injection, however, she quickly passed away. The family claims that on the day of the child’s funeral, something seemed off about the colour of her body. Kaieteur News was informed that an investigation was since launched into the circumstances surrounding the child’s death.
Commenting on the issue at RDC a few Tuesdays ago, the Regional Chairman, Devenand Ramdatt, said that these unfortunate incidents are happening too often.
Ramdatt noted that staff are being paid to do their work and as such should adopt a more proactive attitude. He added, “We need to start taking some very strong action against some of these staff at the Suddie Public Hospital, after all we represent the people of this region.”
