A craftsman who told the court that he was given an earphone for him to keep silent was yesterday remanded to prison on a robbery under-arms charge after he appeared in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
Collin Bryan, 31, of Kitty, Georgetown, appeared before Chief Magistrate, Ann McLennan and denied the charge which alleged that on February 15 at David Street, Kitty, while being in the company of others and armed with a gun, he robbed Andrea Mereira of one cellular phone valued $25,000 and one earphone valued $4,000.
Police Prosecutor Gordon Mansfield objected to bail being granted to the defendant, citing the serious nature of the offence and the penalty the charge attracts. The prosecutor added that the defendant when arrested admitted to the offence and was positively identified by the victim.
The defendant when given a chance to address the court stated “I just came out of prison, dem boys robbed the girl where I does work and they give me the earphone for me to keep my mouth shut.”
When asked by the Magistrate what he did with the earphone, the accused said that he pawned it for $3,000 to buy craft materials.
The prosecutor’s objection was upheld by the Magistrate and the defendant was remanded to prison. He will make his next court appearance on March 9.
