Under an overcast sky and on a moist pitch, the star studded Kendall’s Union Sports Stars emerged champions of the recently concluded Ramnarine ‘Brother’ Appiah T20 tournament played at the Kendall’s Union Cricket Ground, No 19 Village, Berbice. They beat arch rival Kendall’s Union Sports Club (KUSC) in a nail biting final by seven wickets in a game reduced to eight overs a side due to fading light. The tournament was sponsored by Mukesh Appiah and family in honour of his father.
In the first semi-final, Seawell won the toss and took first strike scoring 71 for 9 wickets off their 10 overs allotment. Martin Baker and J. Chunilall with 15 runs each were the only batsmen making double figures. Bowling for KUSC, Samuel Baker and Ravin Seecharran took two wickets apiece. In reply, KUSC raced to 74 for one off 7.2 overs with Daniel Baker leading the way with 45 not out consisting of four fours and four sixes. E. Garnett supported with an unbeaten 26.
In the second semi-final, Kendall’s Union Sports Stars plundered Jai Hind bowling to amass 126 for 2 off 10 overs with former national under-19 player Khemraj Mahadeo making 47 not out. He got support from former national wicketkeeper/batsman Delbert Hicks 46 and Dasrath Debiden 23. In reply, Jai Hind struggled to 69 for 5 off 10 overs with Khemraj Sumair 22, Balram Baldeo and Anil Beharry 14 (n.o) being the principal scorers. Joshua Tayah took two wickets for the winning team.
In the grand final, KUSC batted first and made 60 for 3 off 8 overs with Errol Garnett scoring an unbeaten 23 and Seecharran 16. Tayah took two wickets. In reply, KUSS made 63 for 3 in the final over.
The winning and runner up teams received cash incentives. Trophies were given to the winning team, Tayah, man-of-the-match in the final, Daniel Baker and Mahadeo, man-of-the-match in the two semi finals respectively. Mukesh Appiah thanked everyone who made the event possible to honour his late father.
