A businessman who plies his trade in the Berbice River with his family was pounced on by five armed bandits.
Randy Gladstone, a businessman who sells groceries and clothing on his boat to persons living along the Berbice River, was docked at Henry Tata Village, Berbice River when the men pulled up with a speedboat and boarded the vessel. Gladstone’s daughter, Rushell Gladstone, told reporters that on Friday morning at approximately 03:00 hrs she got up and heard her father talking.
“I heard my father saying ‘bandits, bandits’ and then he call for me. Then I run upstairs the boat. When he was trying to open the boat door he see them and close it back”.
According to her, the men, earlier, had approached them saying they wanted to buy fuel.
The men then entered the boat and began to search the vessel. They reportedly took with them, batteries, money, diesel, cutlass, cell phones, gas, mixing oil, torchlight and other items.
At the time, Rushell stated that they were in the boat selling groceries at Henry Tata Village. The men, she recounted, were all armed.
Divisional Commander Lyndon Alves confirmed that approximately $250,000 in cash was stolen.
A source further added that close to $1.1 M in total cash and items were taken from the vessel.
Investigating ranks are expected to head to the area today to continue their investigations. No one has since been arrested.
