The Guyana Power and Light (GPL) in a statement, yesterday, is claiming that Essequibo’s recent power outages are due mainly to fuel related issues.
The state-owned company noted that these interruptions, referred to as ‘trips,’ lasted for no more than 15 minutes.
The GPL statement was in response to a report on Friday in Kaieteur News in which a photo was captioned, “Three new Caterpillar generators at Anna Regina Power Plant.”
The generators were believed to have been the new sets procured by the company for Region Two. The power company, however, noted that the generators shown in the photo were not the new sets, but rather rental sets.
GPL further noted that the three new 1.78 megawatts generators acquired by the company have not been put into operation as yet.
GPL said that last year, the entire Essequibo Coast was converted from 50 hertz to 60 hertz. This necessitated the rental of the four Caterpillar sets, which provide sufficient generation compatible with the converted network.
Kaieteur News was informed that the new generators are currently being assembled, and will be commissioned with the new power plant at the end of the second quarter in 2018. This effort is in keeping with GPL’s developmental agenda for the Essequibo Coast.
