Mark Campbell, who was convicted last year October for engaging in sexually activity with a seven-year-old boy, was yesterday freed of a similar charge after a mixed 12-member jury returned a majority verdict of 11 not guilty and one guilty.
In relation to yesterday’s matter, Campbell was indicted on two counts of engaging in sexual activity with a child family member. The first incident reportedly occurred sometime during September 2011 when the child was only three years of age. The second incident reportedly occurred sometime during July 2013, when the boy was five years old. Both incidents involved sexual penetration.
The jury returned with the majority not guilty verdict on the first count. The jury was, however, unable to arrive at a verdict for the second count returning with eight not guilty and four guilty. Campbell was unrepresented by counsel. State Counsel Shawnette Austin and Orinthia Schmidt appeared for the prosecution. Justice Simone Morris-Ramlall presided over the case.
The Judge informed Campbell that the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has to decide whether he will have to undergo another trial for the second indictment. Last year October, Justice Morris-Ramlall sentenced Campbell to life imprisonment after he was found guilty by a jury of two counts of engaging in sexual activity with a child.
The Judge informed Campbell that he would only become eligible for parole after serving 30 years.
The first incident occurred sometime during September 2011 when the lad was just seven years old; while the second sexual act with the same young boy took place on July 20, 2013.
These incidents also involved sexual penetration.
