A 23-year-old man was yesterday ordered to undergo a psychiatric evaluation after being charged for snatching a woman’s handbag.
Steven Henry, of 23 Herstelling East Bank Demerara, appeared before Principal Magistrate Judy Latchman in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts to answer to a charge of larceny from a person.
It is alleged that on January 26 at Hunter Street, Albouystown, he snatched one shoulder bag valued $10,000, property of Umaka Douglas.
Henry denied the charge after it was read to him by the Magistrate.
The man’s mother who was present in court told the Magistrate that her son is a mental patient at the Georgetown Public Hospital. The Magistrate, after listening to the woman, ordered that her son undergo a psychiatric evaluation.
Police Prosecutor Arvin Moore had no objection to bail being granted to the defendant.
Facts presented by the prosecutor stated that on the day in question, Douglas was sitting on a chair at a wash bay when she felt someone pulling at her bag. When she turned around she saw Henry running with her bag.
An alarm was raised and Henry was apprehended and taken to the station.
The defendant was ordered to post $70,000 bail. He was instructed to make his next court appearance on February 19.
