A Guyana-born woman has been honored by the British Government for her long and dedicated service, after serving for over twenty-six years in the Civil Service.
Mrs. Jacqueline Williams, nee Reddock, with Hopetown roots, spent her childhood years in New Amsterdam and completed studies at the New Amsterdam Technical Institute before migrating to the United Kingdom.
Mrs. Williams’ tenure, which was in the Clerical area in the British Civil Service, started in the Department of Environmental Food and Rural Affairs, she also served in the Cabinet Office before she was transferred to the Home Office in 2014 where she worked as Administrative Officer until retirement in November 2016 – after twenty-six years of meritorious service.
She was nominated and accepted for the Imperial Service Medal by the Cabinet Office. This was established under the statutes of the Imperial Service Order, on 8 August, 1902, by King Edward VII. It is presented to selected civil servants who complete 25 years upon retirement. Mrs. Williams’ name was published alongside other distinguished civil servants in the London Gazette in 2017.
HM Inspector Matt Parr presented Mrs. Williams with the medal and a letter from the Central Chancery of the Order of Knighthood, St. James’s Palace.
Mrs. Williams recalled that one of her most proud moments would have had to do with her contribution to the successful delivery of individual electoral registration system enabling the first on line applications to register to vote, providing a secure, quick and accessible system for individuals. The project was widely reported and celebrated, and there was a ‘Thank you’ dinner hosted by then-Deputy Prime Minister, Nick Clegg, and attended by several Ministers.
There were also challenging times. Mrs. Williams recalled that the period of the outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease would have been the most demanding time for her. However, she was able to stand resilient throughout, and such qualities did not go unnoticed, she added.
