A Partnership for National Unity/Alliance for Change (APNU/AFC) Councillor and member of the Community Development
Council (CDC), yesterday appeared before the Fort Wellington Magistrate’s Court to answer to a charge of felonious wounding, allegedly committed on a chips vendor of West Coast Berbice.
Abel Seetaram, 37, of Woodley Park, West Coast Berbice appeared before Magistrate Rhondell Weaver. He was represented by attorney-at-law, Tejnarine Ramroop. He heard the charge read to him that he committed the incident on Natram Rabindranauth.
He was not required to plead and was subsequently granted bail in the sum of $100,000.
He is set to return to court for report on February 7, 2018.
Seetaram was arrested on Sunday for clubbing Natram Rabindranauth, 54, to the head with a piece of wood. The injured man was hospitalised at the New Amsterdam Public Hospital with a broken jaw, fractured nose and internal bleeding.
The vendor explained that he was vending on his bicycle along the No.11 Public Road when he noticed his son involved in a scuffle with Seetaram’s son.
Rabindranauth, the cousin of Seetaram stated that he stopped and attempted to intervene when Seetaram came out.
He said that after he received the lash, he fell to the ground and was bleeding profusely from his nose when Seetaram reportedly walked away with his son in the direction of the Fort Wellington Police Station.
Rabindranath stated that shortly after he managed to compose himself and subsequently left for the Police Station with his son as well. A report was made and a medical document was given to him by the police to visit the Fort Wellington Hospital.
Rabindranath was eventually transferred to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital where he was admitted.
The victim has since been discharged from the New Amsterdam Public Hospital and is home. Rabindranauth confirmed that he is still experiencing bleeding from his nostril compounded with some internal pain.
Back in May, Seetaram was found guilty of three charges in relation to an accident involving a government SUV.
He was also taken into custody along with APNU/AFC councillor Carol Joseph on allegations of fraud.
It was alleged that cheques valued $1M, $500,000 and $200,000 were withdrawn from the Mahaicony Abary Rice Development Scheme (MARDS) account to repair a Ministry of Presidency vehicle, however the money was reportedly diverted to other uses.
