Hundreds of children from Leopold Street, Werk -en- Rust were treated at the end of year event hosted by the Georgetown/Stabroek Lions Club.
According to President of the Georgetown/Stabroek Lions Club, June Leitch, over 300 gifts and snacks were distributed to children from the area. The group also had their very own Santa Claus and helpers during the distribution exercise.
Leitch told Kaieteur News that the exercise is part of the club’s annual Christmas initiative.
“The Club usually hosts a Christmas party for children at the St. Stanislaus College. However, we decided to bring our end of year exercise to Leopold Street, this year.”
The Lion’s Club noted that the initiative is part of efforts to reach out to the less fortunate.
“We also visit the homes for the elderly and children and conduct similar exercises.”
In addition, she noted that the Lions International Organisation, services twenty –four Clubs across the country has been engaged in a number of community projects.
She said that the Club partnered with a number of other Non-Governmental Organisations, (NGOs) and State Agencies on several of these projects.
“The Lions Club does a lot of work around the country. For instance, we would partner with the Ministry of Public Health to conduct medical outreach; the Georgetown Mayor and City Council for Clean up exercises, the Amerindian hostel to distribute clothing and other articles. We also collaborate with the Guyana Defence Force to visit the interior where we conduct lectures on topical issues such as human trafficking.”
The Lions Club of Stabroek, Georgetown observed 16 years of service by hosting a feeding programme for the destitute; close to 100 persons of all ages were given food and juice.
As part of the celebrations, there was also a medical outreach where the club collaborated with the Ministry of Public Health and the Guyana Defence Force, to conduct eye testing, diabetes and blood pressure testing. Persons also took the opportunity to donate blood.
