Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan yesterday remanded a miner to prison, for the murder of a Venezuelan boat captain.
Thirty-six-year-old David Gaskin, of 649 Kuru Kuru, Linden/Soesdyke Highway, appeared in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts and was not required to plead to the indictable offence, which alleged that on December 8 at Eteringbang Landing, in the Essequibo Magisterial District, he murdered Owen Williams John, of San Martin, Caracas, Venezuela.
According to information, Gaskin and Williams were consuming alcohol at a shop when an argument ensued over a bottle of alcohol which Williams had purchased for Gaskin, and Gaskin had refused to repay him for.
Gaskin reportedly became annoyed and pushed Williams to the ground and dealt him several stomps to his chest until he became unconscious. Williams’s body was left lying on the ground with blood gushing out his ears and nostrils.
Williams’s body was transported to the Georgetown Public Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Persons in the area reported the matter to the police and Gaskin was arrested. He allegedly admitted in a caution statement to the offence, hence the present charge.
The unrepresented accused was remanded to prison and was instructed to make his next court appearance on March 20, 2018 at the Kamarang Magistrate’s Court for commencement of the Preliminary Inquiry (PI) into the murder.
