A businessman, who has been on the run for the past three months following the discovery of an illegal airplane and airstrip at Santa Fe, Lethem, in August last, has surrendered.
Accompanied by a lawyer, Hutshan Ramsingh also known as Seon Singh turned himself in on Friday. He had reportedly been hiding out in neighbouring Brazil.
Reports are that the businessman facilitated the construction of the airstrip and the landing of the plane which is suspected to be involved in trafficking of narcotics and firearms. The illegal aircraft landed on August 13, last.
The suspect was arrested in the initial stage of the investigation and was placed on bail. He fled the country shortly after. Two persons who reportedly conspired with him in the construction of the airstrip were charged. They are Nathan Hamilton and Wazim King.
The illegal aircraft and airstrip were discovered by the police about 10 miles from Santa Fe. Reports are that three persons were seen running away from the plane, shortly after it landed. A senior police official has since been transferred from the division for allegedly facilitating the individuals’ escape.
Ranks have confiscated two passports – belonging to a Colombian and a Brazilian – that were found on the illegal Beechcraft twin-engine plane.
A quantity of dry ration, medical supplies, clothing, footwear, two hand-held radios, flashlights, and cellular phones were found on the plane.
This discovery was made just a week after soldiers found another illegal airstrip, a chain saw, aviation fuel, 12 abandoned camps and several dug out trenches in the same area.
Additionally, another illegal airstrip was found in Yurupukari, Region Nine, in September 2015. Investigations later revealed that the plane had originated in Colombia.
