The Guyana Football Federation (GFF) in partnership with Top Brandz distributors launched an exciting tournament titled, the GFF-Corona Beer Super 16 year-end classic at the GFF’s headquarters yesterday. The tournament will feature 16 teams and will be played in the nervy knockout format.
The lucrative competition will also feature the GFF’s ten cream of the crop clubs that are participating in the Elite league along with the five of the best teams that are competing in second division tournaments currently and an indigenous all-star team.
Those additional top five teams that were deemed the best by Competitions Director Ian Alves are Winners’ Connection, Pouderoyen, Police Sports Club, Camptown and Grove Hi-tech. Those teams and the other 11 squads will be all aiming for the grand cash prize of $2million, while the losing finalist will receive $1million, third place $500,000 and fourth $250,000, when the competition kicks off this Friday at the Mackenzie Sports Club (MSC) ground in Linden with a double-header.
The double-header will see Winners’ Connection matching skills with Camptown FC at 18:30hrs, while Milerock will clash with Cougars FC in the second and final match of the night at 21:00hrs. The tournament has resulted in the postponement of the GFF Elite League, which is scheduled to restart in February 2018.
Speaking during yesterday’s launch, head of the GFF, Wayne Forde, promised that this tournament will be electrifying, while expressing thanks to Top Brandz for sponsoring the two-week event that culminates on New Year’s Day.
Marvin Wray, the Marketing and Promotions Manager of Top Brandz, the distributors of Corona Beer, stated that in the ten years in his company’s existence, they always look for an opportunity to give back to Guyana. “Football on January 1st is part of Guyanese culture and this is just the beginning of a potentially long and prosperous partnership with the federation (GFF)”, Wray explained. He further noted that as part of the grand final on January 1st 2018, Jamaican Dancehall artiste, Popcaan will cap off the event with a live performance. (Calvin Chapman)
