Dear Editor,
The Anna Regina office of the Ministry of Social Protection deserves tremendous praise for the joy and delight that were so evident for the very first time amongst hundreds of old age pensioners, who had turned out at the Amerindian Hostel in Suddie to uplift their books for the next year.
Significant improvements were made during the two-day distribution on Thursday and Monday last with the expeditious distribution which was made ever so simple unlike previous years. This is to the pensioners’ satisfaction and comfort.
The female officer and her two-member team, in a surprise move, commenced work at 7:00 am, two hours earlier to avoid a build up as was often the case in the past.
For the first time, a tent was placed outside to provide better seating accommodation for the elderly, compared to before when it was all “cramped” inside. A great many pensioners had to stand on the stairway or on the road shoulders.
In the past pensioners were given a number and were kept shifting down umpteen times in a disgusting and unbearable situation of discomfort so much so, that it prompted me to make a suggestion to the Department to abolish the system. I got a favourable response.
On those recent two days it was only for the pensioners to walk in and out.
