DEAR EDITOR,
I read a recent letter, which seemed to suggest that a one-party government might help to mend our “divided and broken country”. This may work in some cultures, but not in all. Would this be regarded as ‘democratic’ in the true sense of the word? Given our culture and mindset, would it work in Guyana’s?
In the late-1990s, I was discussing Guyana with a once passionate advocate and hard-working activist for the political party which eventually produced the first post-Independence President. This woman had since taken up residence in America and said she did so because “they would not listen”.
I gathered speaking from grassroot level and seeing things as they were could not persuade those in charge to change the mind set. She and several former supporters became frustrated and fled.
The top politicians did not listen then, would they listen now? One wonders. We can but try and see.
