President David Granger is expected to showcase Guyana’s Green State Development Strategy (GSDS) during his feature address at the third United Nations Environment Assembly.
At Thursday’s post-Cabinet press briefing, Minister of State, Joseph Harmon, told reporters that the President has been invited by the UN to give the feature address at the high-level segment at the Assembly’s opening in Nairobi, Kenya during December 4.
Harmon said that the invitation “reflects Guyana’s growing international profile as a leading advocate for the protection of the environment and the recognition which is being accorded to its green trajectory of development”.
Aside from promoting the GSDS, the President is also expected to press for further international action to arrest global pollution and global warming. During his attendance of the Environment Assembly, President Granger will also be delivering the feature address at a high-level side event on reducing pollution in the extractive sector.
The President has strongly advocated for the sustainable development of the environment and has been advocating internationally for more action by world leaders to address climate change.
Meanwhile, Guyana will be represented at the 10th Caribbean Conference on Caribbean Disaster Management which will be held in Bahamas during December 4-9.
Hosted by the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CEDMA) will see discussions on the strengthening of regional response mechanisms, lessons learned from hurricanes – Harvey, Irma and Maria, and the challenges of disaster risk management, the practices and solutions will be highlighted during the conference.
The Director-General of the Guyana Civil Defence Commission (CDC) will be attending the Conference.
