DEAR EDITOR,
For the appointment of this chairman, lists of six persons had to be presented to the president so that the opposition and the president could find common ground in appointing a suitable person. The first list was rejected and so was the second and third. This was an excellent position taken.
On one of those lists was a person whom I taught in Georgetown while I was teaching ‘O’ and ‘A’ level classes. Even though that person moved on and academically qualified himself, some of his prejudices from class level still prevailed. As a teacher of fifty years I would disqualify him immediately.
I remembered well a lawyer from that list. He was instrumental in illegally usurping the power of the secretary of an organisation, and re-directing this organisation in a political way. What an election commissioner he would have made!
Why put a race relation person on such a list. In addition, other persons who were involved in private and public organisations, and whose character would have come in to question, were also part of the lists.
The lists were not used genuinely for the purpose involved. They were used to embarrass the president and thus provide a platform for submission.
Lists provided to the president were lacking in substance and so the president did what constitutionally he should do. Put away all these unwanted lists and make the decision himself.
Well done Mr. President; Keep on the same track.
