DEAR EDITOR,
If the comments attributed to HM, Mrs. Winifred Ellis are true, then she ought to do the right thing and resign immediately as she would be unfit for that position.
Blaming and shaming victims of sexual abuse, especially young girls/students is disrespectful, inappropriate and more importantly, shows a lack of understanding of the power dynamics of pupil and teacher in the classroom.
Instead of referring to her students as “slack and loose” it seems to me the HM should be more interested in finding out if Bishops’ students – indeed students under her care – are being groomed and seduced into having sexual relations with teachers. Further, even if students are “slack and loose” their behaviour does not justify exploitation by teachers.
The Minister of Education should work expeditiously to ensure this matter is resolved in a timely manner. Effective policy, procedures and penalties must be developed to ensure the emotional and physical safety of all students – in all schools.
