Over the next eight months, nine local female entrepreneurs will be introduced to methods of advancing their business through networking, technology and finance.
The first session of the programme was held yesterday at the GeoTechVision Conference Room at Lot 50 Brickdam, Stabroek.
According to facilitator of the programme and Managing Director of GeoTechVision, Valrie Grant, Guyana is one of nine (9) territories in the Caribbean participating in the second Women Innovators Network in the Caribbean Acceleration Programme (WINC -AP), for women in business.
Grant noted that more than 250 women from across the region applied to benefit from the GISP WINC-AP project and nine Guyanese women in business have been selected to participate in programme.
“Over the coming eight months, these women will meet together to learn about how they can advance their ventures, using networking, accessing financing and up-leveling their business with technology,” Grant emphasized.
The GeoTechVision Manager explained further that WINC-AP is designed to help growth-oriented women entrepreneurs innovate within their businesses, and have the self-confidence to make the necessary changes to improve their competitiveness and boost their growth.
Participants of project are set to benefit from a suite of services including business and personal development, one-to-one mentoring, technical workshops and motivational sessions.
In her feature address, General Manager of Credit of Republic Bank, Parbattie Khan noted that she was pleased to share and celebrate with the participants the fact that they had taken the first step, to improve.
“I salute the organizers and participants for being part of this movement to continue to bring women together to network and learn new skills to improve and advance your business endeavours.”
Khan noted that global trends show women entrepreneurs to be among the fastest growing, most productive, and in fact most bankable segment from a reduced risk perspective.
“However, there are very real issues that impact women… the challenge for how we as women are able to effectively manage the businesses we develop and operate, while at the same time caring for our families and households.
But despite these challenges, women are making strides globally, regionally and locally, in an ever-increasing competitive environment. History has recorded many triumphant examples,” the bank manager added.
Khan said too that Republic Bank is poised to continue to support the efforts developing women entrepreneurs as an imperative.
“This is in alignment with our objective of building up and developing our people, our communities and our nation as a whole, because as women we guide our businesses, but we also influence our homes and our children, the next generation of leaders.”
She lauded what WINC-AP is doing through this initiative, building supportive business networks in an increasingly competitive environment.
As such, Khan stressed that “women must do everything they can to support and grow potential; to empower each other, to help build our self-confidence, as the reality is that, the fundamental needs and opportunities for women entrepreneurs differ from those of our male counterparts”.
“Women, on the other hand, have a much tougher job proving themselves in business; sustaining support for and interest in their ventures; forming and maintaining business networks and similar support mechanisms. Thus training will provide you with the tools to create networks and linkages to provide the support to sustain your development.
Men in business receive greater cooperation and support and benefit from strong business networks, there is the good “old boys” network, a practice that we know has existed through generations, across the ages. We, as women need to learn to trust and support one another.”
