The George Subraj Family Foundation in collaboration with the Ministry of Public Health, yesterday donated some 700 glasses to the residents of Region Two through a Vision Outreach Programme.
The outreach which was facilitated at the Anna Regina Mandir, included free reading and prescription eyeglasses along with eye drops to treat eye diseases such as glaucoma were distributed.
While the targeted number of persons to be treated was merely 300; 700 persons supported the outreach by means of their participation. Over the years, the George Subraj Foundation was instrumental in philanthropy works in Guyana and as such, the vision outreach was aimed at providing free eye care services to those who are suffering from eye diseases and also to the less fortunate.
Tony Subraj, who is both President of the foundation and son of the late George Subraj, told the media that the foundation has been working along with the Ophthalmology Department of the Georgetown Public Hospital as the foundation sees a great need for eye care services in Guyana.
Subraj added, “Today we brought with us 700 pairs of readers and prescription eyeglasses for distribution and the Georgetown Public Hospital provided us with two doctors from the hospital to conduct eye testing and to look for other eye diseases. Today, our goal is to reach out to 700 persons; since eye care is important and we’ve decided to do this vision outreach, since it was the next logical thing to do since we know by treating some of these things like glaucoma in the early stage can prevent blindness. Not only are we giving the glasses out, but we have eye drops as well for distribution.”
Subraj noted that it is his desire is to see members of the foundation continue the charitable works, in the step of his father. “Basically, my dad’s vision was always in health, education, and medical missions and it started out with the Guyana Watch many years ago doing kidney transplants. Since then the legacy of his foundation has evolved in doing cornea transplants. We did 61 cornea transplants and 27 kidney transplants and 8 major heart surgeries. For the kidney transplants, we provide all the expertise. We bring the transplant doctors from Washington D.C and those doctors work side by side with the Guyanese doctors to provide quality services and this is something we will continue.”
It is expected that the George Subraj Family Foundation will soon conduct a similar Vision Outreach on the Leguan Island on November 17.
