Dear Editor,
Freddie Kissoon’s article, “Nagamootoo’s ‘Phantom of the Opera” makes for interesting reading. I grew up a few villages from Nagamootoo and I am well aware of his vigorous and zealous activism for the PPP. It was therefore very disappointing when Nagamootoo was allowed to break ranks with PPP and became part of what many persons are describing as an impotent AFC.
Kissoon did a very clever analysis of Nagamootoo’s fall from grace using the play in the title of his article as a metaphor for the Prime Minister’s political journey. Kissoon made two bold references to the actions of Nagamootoo-
“Moses went over to the AFC and tore down the PPP” and “Moses couldn’t get Guyana (meaning he couldn’t be President), so he gave Guyana … to the PNC.” At first it sounds like a strong indictment of the value system of Nagamootoo but I am afraid, closer reading will prove Kisssoon to be correct. Nagamootoo is actually a victim of a bad misjudgment of the politics of the PNC. In my opinion, I feel Nagamootoo is being emasculated, that is, he is not being given enough leverage to function the way he wants to.
This is disappointing considering the fact that Nagamootoo has been a veteran in the field of politics. There is nothing like integrity and trust in politics, at least not in Guyana. One remembers an arrangement between the PPP and the PNC to the rotate the mayorship of Georgetown. Everyone who follows politics in Guyana knows what happened in that arrangement.
And there are more examples, so why would Nagamootoo think that these people would change? Power is a terrible thing. The PPP also shares some of this blame. Nagamootoo would have really been pushed to leave the party. Those responsible should have given him an opportunity to function in a position that he is most suitable. But it is what it is.
Nagamootoo may be at the end of his political career unless something dramatic happens in the next two and a half years which I doubt. To say that “the writing is on the wall” may sound redundant but so appears Nagamootoo as Prime Minister.
