Nine CSEC students from the Port Mourant Secondary School, Corentyne, Berbice received grants from the Small Business Bureau of the Ministry of Business in an Inaugural Grant Disbursal Ceremony Friday.
The students who were awarded the grants are Davashnie Sugrim, Michelle Adrian, Rakjumarie Rampersaud, Yoshoda Mahabir, Mohesha Narine, Shabina Narine, Kevin Henry, Delicia Sarmentoo, and Alicia Ramoo. All grants are expected to be disbursed by the end of November. The school is among 15 schools across Guyana that participated in the Ministry’s ‘In-School Entrepreneurship Programme’. The In-School Entrepreneurship Programme is a collaboration of the Ministry of Business Small Business Bureau with the Ministry of Education. The Programme strives to promote economic empowerment among Guyanese youths while providing economic support for less fortunate students. The programme also seeks to recognise feasible business plans created and submitted by students in their School Based Assessments (SBAs), which is a compulsory component of CSEC for some subject areas.
At the ceremony, Minister of Business, Dominic Gaskin, addressed the students on entrepreneurship skills that the students should develop. These skills include creativity, innovativeness and willingness to take risks in order to be successful.
