A 20-year-old man who was out on bail on four armed robbery charges was yesterday back
before a city magistrate, to answer to a fifth such charge.
Anthonio Maraj of Public Road, Agricola, East Bank Demerara, appeared before Senior Magistrate Leron Daly in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts and denied that on November 2 at D’Urban Backlands, Georgetown, while being in the company of others and armed with a gun, he robbed Wes Matthews of an iPhone and other items totalling $71,000.
Police Prosecutor Richard Harris objected to bail being granted to Maraj, citing that he is a repeat offender and has four ongoing matters before the courts.
The prosecutor added that it was while Maraj was out on bail that he allegedly committed another offence, and if bail is granted to him, he would not return to the court for the trial.
The prosecutor also told the court that Maraj was positively identified by Matthews.
According to information on the day in question, Matthews went to a shop at D’Urban Backlands to purchase something to eat and it was while he was returning to his jeep, he was confronted by Maraj, who pointed a gun in his face and told him to hand over his valuables.
The court heard that Matthews, being fearful for his life, handed over his valuables to Maraj, who then rode away on a motorcycle.
The objection to bail was upheld and Maraj was remanded to prison. He was instructed to make his next court appearance on November 24.
