Dear Editor,
City Hall’s Public Relations Officer (ag) Debra Lewis very smugly and nonchalantly, informed the press that three of the city’s four garbage disposal trucks were down for repairs, whilst garbage was piling up every were. This is less than a week after the Director of Solid Waste Management announced that the trucks were back on the streets cleaning up Georgetown.
It seems as though this lady has a penchant for reporting half the story about the City Council, and in many instances, half the truth.
What the PRO failed to report, was that the Council’s Mechanical Workshop was being starved of all resources, including tools and spare parts, rendering it incapable of properly repairing and maintaining the city trucks.
The financial resources City Hall is outlaying to source back-up trucks from contractors could be used to retool the workshop and purchase the necessary vehicle spares. But then again, maybe Council administrators benefit in more ways than one from outsourcing repairs of their vehicles and outsourcing garbage collection.
She failed to report that in the midst of this crisis where garbage is overflowing everywhere, where the city is flooded, where the crime rate in the city is up, that the Fantastic Four and others took off on an expensive and useless junket to the Far East.
She has failed to report that after one of her colleagues was involved in the statutory rape of a minor on a municipal premises, the ‘King’ and Queen of the City were involved in a cover up, taking two months and after much pressure to report the matter to the police and the child protection agency.
One could only hope that they would be dealt with by the relevant authorities, so that executive lawlessness at City Hall would stop and an example made of others.
She failed to mention to the press that City Hall is totally bankrupt with mountains of debt owed to the Guyana Power and Light, the National Insurance Pension Scheme, the Guyana Revenue Authority and every private sector agency that was foolish enough to give them credit.
PRO please remember what Abraham Lincoln once famously said, “You can fool some of the people all of the time, and all of the people some of the time, but you cannot fool all of the people all of the time.”
Sincerely,
Nadine Jerrick
Please share this to every Guyanese including your house cats.
