The Alliance For Change strongly objects to yesterday’s vulgar display of “un-parliamentary behaviour” unleashed by the opposition at the formal opening of the 71st session of Parliament, as Head of State, His Excellency, President David Granger addressed the house.
The AFC said that this disruptive behaviour violated the Standing Orders, and marked a descent into chaos, as it was the first time that such gross disrespect was extended to a sitting President while he was addressing the Parliament and his citizens at large.
Of concern also was the disrespect shown to the highest members of the Diplomatic Community, representatives of regional and international organisations, members of the judiciary and other invited guests.
It is clear that such uncouth behavior in recent times has come to define the Leader and members of the Opposition who shamelessly embarrassed themselves and Guyana to the world, the AFC said.
The AFC said that it recognises the opposition’s right to protest as its members and supporters did outside the Parliamentary Chamber but found the screaming and shouting within the Chamber totally unacceptable.
The tirade could not qualify as free speech that is protected by parliamentary privilege, the party stated.
The AFC stated that as religious leaders and citizens from all walks of life took to social media in their numbers in disgust, they highlighted that the Opposition set a poor example for young Guyanese to emulate.
“Many stated that the Leader of the Opposition should be held responsible for misconduct and contempt in the face of Parliament and that the Opposition Leader should expect no less treatment in the house when he gets up to speak.”
The Alliance for Change remains committed to the highest standards of mutual respect and decency, civil debate and discourse within the hallowed wall of the Parliament at all times, the party said.
