A 71-year-old man is now dead, following a fatal accident on Friday 27 October, 2017 on the Cove and John Public Road, East Coast Demerara. Dead is Derrick Freeman of Lot 4, Cove and John, East Coast Demerara.
According to reports, Freeman was riding a pedal cycle around 17:45 when he attempted to cross the road, he was hit by a speeding motor vehicle bearing registration number GTT 4080, a Minister’s vehicle.
He was rushed to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival after sustaining severe head injuries.
Ranks at the Cove and John Police Station reportedly conducted a breathalyzer test on the driver Dennis Stewart, and concluded that he was not under the influence of alcohol.
Kaieteur News understands that the family has accepted from the driver an undisclosed amount of cash for the funeral and other expenses.
The elderly man had two children and a wife. His body is currently awaiting post mortem.
Additionally, on Saturday last, a route 44 minibus collided with a car on Main Street, Georgetown during the evening hours.
The occupants of the vehicles were severely injured and were rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation by ambulances from the Guyana Fire Service and the hospital.
Investigations are ongoing.
