Investigations into the recent flooding at Alexander Village and Riverview have resulted in suspension of the sluice door operator who was supposed to be on duty at the time of the occurrence.
Earlier this month, several sections of Riverview and Alexander Village came under flood waters as a result of situation caused by the Riverview Koker that was breached at the high tide. The Mayor and City Council (M&CC) stated that it was investigating the matter to determine who was responsible for the opening of the sluice doors.
The Mayor of Georgetown, Patricia Chase-Green stated that if found negligent, the suspect will receive a severe punishment.
Kaieteur News has since been informed that investigations into the matter revealed that and the investigations have led to a three weeks suspension for the sluice operator.
Officials of the Engineers Department of the Georgetown Mayor and Councillors had also visited the site but could not determine whether the flooding was as a result of a breach in the koker door.
“The investigation was basically inconclusive because the flooding was so severe. However, given the damage caused as result of the incident, it was recommended that someone must be held responsible for the incident,” explained a source close to the issue.
Initial reports had indicated that the sluice door operator, had fallen asleep and the koker malfunctioned. But the overseer contended that the sluice doors were jammed.
The residents reported it is the first time that area has been flooded so severely. Some sought compensation for the articles damaged by the flood.
The Mayor and City Councillors had noted that “there was heavy damage to private property and for this, we apologise to residents in those particular areas who are affected.”
Town Clerk, Royston King, noted that it should not have happened. He said, “We regret the inconvenience suffered by the residents in those areas.”
