The Florida/Guyana Hope Incorporated, a nonprofit foundation, made up of Guyanese living in Florida, USA, is back once again. This time the benevolence is greater with much more cash and other necessities.
The organisation which was founded in December 2013 is in its fourth year of giving back to Guyanese. The president is Mohamed Yassin. Since its formation, it has expanded tremendously in the short space of time.
A sister body, the Guyana/ Florida Hope non-profit organisation, based in the Upper Corentyne was formed subsequently. It is headed by businessman, George Baijnauth.
Whilst in Guyana, the Florida-based group is obtaining some assistance from the Regal Stationery and Officer Centre and Steve’s Jewellery for some of the ventures.
This year, the group recently handed over a US$21,500 cheque to the Guyana Chapter to be used in assisting Guyanese in need. This donation was handed over by President Yassin to Secretary of the local chapter, Carmen Ally during a simple ceremony held at the Crabwood Creek Sports Ground.
Minister of National Security, Khemraj Ramjattan was among those in attendance. He congratulated the donours and stated that they are an excellent example of what Guyanese overseas should be doing. He called on others to take a page out of their book and emulate the work of the Foundation.
Mohamed Yassin said that whilst in the USA, the members saw a need and felt the call to serve and help citizens back home in Guyana.
He said that despite many challenges and the devastation of the some of the members’ homes by Hurricane Irma, they still felt the need to continue giving.
Mr. Baijnauth stated that the organisation is not a ‘fly by night one’ and is here to stay. He said that, “We want to be a prominent fixture and of more help to the Guyanese society.”
Apart from the sizable cash donation, millions of dollars worth in supplies was shipped home and are ready for distribution. The consignment includes over 40 wheelchairs, 20 walkers, crutches, back/neck/knee brace, clothing and medical supplies among others. This significant donation comes after the group made donations of US$15,000 and US $9,000 to the Guyana Chapter.
Since its formation, the Foundation has grown to be one of the leading overseas based non-profit organisations which give yearly help to their counterparts back home.
Persons and organisations have been assisted in a number of ways, including eye surgery overseas, treatment for cancer, kidney transplant, acquire prosthesis legs, among others.
Also, over 200 computers were donated as well as clothing, footwear, school supplies and wheelchairs. Fire victims throughout Guyana were also assisted.
